History of the Panama Hat

Panama hats are not made in Panama, they originated from Ecuador where they are made to this day.  In the 1850s they were exported to Panama because at that time there was low tourism in Ecuador and Panama was growing at the level of tourism and commerce, causing the hats makers to bring their crafts to the busy trade center of Panama, the hats makers began to sell much more than they could sell in Ecuador. The hats were then sold to California for the historic California Gold Rush and there they became Famous as Panama's hats in that area. Then, in 1906 U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Panama to oversee the construction of the Panama Canal and had the ability to wear the hat naturally and have been photographed and released globally as the Panama hat.

The hats are handmade from the plaited leaves of the Carludovica palmata plant, known locally as the toquilla straw. The weaving process takes around one week to months to make each hat; it depends on the finesse of the hat.

This material is fresh, lightweight, and breathable, excellent for summer seasons since its material protects you from the sun, many are used on golf courses.
